Chapter One – New York Recording Project

MY SOUL is Shoketta’s debut album, recorded in New York and released nationwide in Japan in July 2014.

The story behind the album began in 2011, when Shoketta invited New York bassist Richie Goods to Okinawa to perform in her concert series, ONE NIGHT ONLY. The concert sold out several days in advance. Following that musical encounter, roughly six months later in 2012, recording for MY SOUL began in New York.

Produced and arranged by Richie Goods, the album features musicians including Clarence Penn and Andy Ezrin, along with other New York-based artists. Across ten tracks spanning standards, soul, pop and spiritual music, the recording places Shoketta’s voice at the center of a musical identity rooted in jazz, soul, R&B and gospel.

More than a decade after its release, MY SOUL remains more than an earlier recording in Shoketta’s catalog. It represents one of the foundations of the musical journey that followed. Building on the experiences she gained in New York, Shoketta is now reconnecting that international musical perspective with the culture and music of her native Okinawa as she develops her next body of work.
